Star , Moon of Beithlehem or Kanaani Flower Stitch ?

Motifs and patterns 

             are considered key elements of Palestinian embroidery.

It is worth noting that Multiple names and their meanings have been attached to individual patterns. Some motifs reflect natural items from rural daily life, such as animals or food, whereas some designations reflect mythological concepts. 

It has been said that The ‘eight-pointed star of Bethlehem’ is named after a meeting between the moon and Astarte, the Canaanite Goddess of fertility.

While known as the Moon of Bethlehem in its region of origin, variations of this  shape were referred to locally by different names across regions , such as "stars" or "roses..

This notable geometric cross stitch Star motif has been used with  different names and symbols through different regions of Palestine,  each potentially infusing its unique touch with a slight difference in stitch drawing 

What is called ‘Star of Bethlehem’ motif – by Bethlehem and Ramallah areas is called '  The Canaani Flower ' or Mill or Fan’ motif in  Ramallah and Gaza areas. 

Also called ‘Moon of Bethlehem’ motif – Bethlehem area and as  ‘Eye of the Cow’ motif – Hebron and Ramallah areas .                               

Whatever name it carries or subtle form it takes, each motif remains a vibrant thread in a shared story.
